At This Point in My Life ...

So tonight I did something that I would never have done otherwise, except that the present moment in which I was called for it. I threw away every single thing that I could think of, that still tied me to my ex Sean.

I threw away the marine button that I had tucked away into the jewelry box in my bathroom. I threw away the photo album tucked into one of the baskets in my laundry room, full of pictures from our first year of dating. Then I dug through my photo boxes in search of all the letters he wrote to me while away at boot camp. I read through every letter and let the tears fall where they might, then I threw those away. I found newspaper clippings from his graduation at Parris Island. I found plane tickets to South Carolina. I found other odds and ends related to him. And yes, you guessed it ... I threw them away.

In a perfect world, I would have a fire pit in which I could let all of those things burn in hell. I want to set fire to each and every single one of those things. However after the tragic fire that took place at the beginning of the month, I think that would be the WRONG choice to make. LOL

But after tossing all of those items out, I broke down and cried. I sobbed and I wept. I became enraged and outraged. I took a good hard look at myself in the mirror, tears streaming down my face. I wept because I am angry. I am angry at myself.

How did I let this go on for so long? Sean and I happily dated for about 2 years. Or what I can remember is the happy times. Then somewhere around the 2.5 mark ... he cheated on me. I took him back, knowing good and well that I should have let him go. Thus began a vicious cycle of him emotionally abusing me and taking advantage of me for two or more years. And I allowed him to do it. For some sad, sorry reason ... I thought he was the one I was supposed to marry. And I thought for some strange, scary reason that I could be the one to fix his brokenness. But instead ... I helped myself become more broken inside.

I'll never forget one scary, rainy night my junior year when I tried to take my life. I remember sitting in my bed, in apartment 504, rocking back and forth thinking there's got to be a better way to end the pain I was feeling ... than to go on living. I rocked and I sobbed. I had been in my room for days upon days. Crying and rocking. And this particular night, I wanted to put an end to it all. And right on time, a friend called me to talk. He uplifted me with positive words and affirmations and told me I was too smart and too gifted to do anything stupid. Kostas saved my life that night. If he had not of called, just on a whim, I may not have been here today.

After that incident, I knew that I needed help. My friends and family meant well but their efforts were not helping me out of my funk. So I checked myself into a counselor. And I only went two or three times. The conversations led me back to other skeletons that I had buried so deep into my closet. And I couldn't stand bringing up all of those untapped, raw emotions that I had worked so hard to bury. So I stopped going and told myself I'd be okay.

Senior year of college ... Sean and I broke up for good. Yet it took me almost three and a half years to really cut ties from him and to let go. My trip to Parris Island and the events that happened afterwards cemented the decision for me to let go. I'll never forget the last time I saw Sean. He had come to visit me in my new condo. And when he left, I started to tear up. I remember saying goodbye ... and that time I meant it. I had endured a whirlwind of emotions the week leading up to this farewell, and at the moment in time, I decided that endure this no longer I could.

Yet, for two or three years after that moment in 2012 ... I continued to weep over this boy late at night. My mind would always wonder back to him. I look back and ask myself "why!?" I do not understand what I was holding on to. I do not understand why. I remember a time my best friend Kitty had come down for the weekend and we watched Eat Pray Love. There was a line in the movie when Julia Roberts said, "Send light and love and drop it." For years after that moment ... even to this day ... those are the words I mutter when I think of Sean.

Yet ... I had thought until recently, that I was 100% over him. I mean in hindsight and reflection ... I just realized I would check up on him <on face book> at least once a week. Scope his page ... see if there were any new updates to his life. I had added his sister and mother to keep tabs on him too. But in my mind, I had moved on. I was doing okay. That was until October when an incident with my new love interest resulted in me having an extreme reaction to a miscommunication. Then in January, I had another breakdown where I found myself sobbing on the living room floor realizing I was still being haunted by my past.

Again however, I picked myself up ... blogged a few entries ... and figured I was good. I had this. I was in control. Until recently when a visit to a third party revealed that I am still very much scarred and impacted by this previous relationship. I believe the words used were, "he was ice cold... selfish." And I was told that I have a closed heart ... closed up like a black fist.

I have been working hard the past two weeks to address this. To understand this source of hurt and to find new ways to let go and open up my heart and mind to new beginnings. It was easy at first, but recently I've hit a bump in the road. It's hard to face these skeletons. To dig up the bones I worked so hard to bury in the deep, dark places of my mind.

But for the first time in a long time, I think I am ready to dig up the bones. To face the raw emotions that come with these skeletons. I am ready because I want to fall in love. I want to get married and start a family. And for the first time in my life, I am realizing that I feel that now is the time. I want to be open and ready for whomever it is that I am supposed to date and marry. I want this new guy to have a chance.

So I decided tonight - it's time to clean out my closet. And I did the thing that I would never have done otherwise, except that the present moment in which I was called for it.

I threw away every single thing, that I could think of, that still tied me to my ex. And as I drink some tea and listen to an eclectic mix of music on spotify, I am trying to find peace. I am recalling the mantra's I so often share with my loved ones: Everything happens for a reason. Everything that's meant to be will be.

And as I finish up this entry, I reflect on the advice and words of encouragement just given to me by one of my best friends:

"You cannot change the past. The important thing is that you're seeing in yourself how much you let him impact you for so long and you're working to fix it and you're moving on now. That's all that matters. And all you can do now is look at the potential relationships you have now and see how you can approach it differently this time without your past influencing it so much. You've got some opportunities in front of you now! Don't worry about the past now or what you would've done differently. You are where you were meant to be at this point in your life."

You are where you were meant to be at this point in your life. I am where I was meant to be at this point in my life.

Dreams

This year is no where near done. My twenty-fifth year of life that is. Yet it has been one of the most profound and significant years of my life. I have learned more than I could have ever imagined I would. And I have grown in more ways than I could have even foreseen. I am changing everyday. Evolving into more of the person I am supposed to be. That I want to be. And I am so grateful, so incredibly grateful for each experience. Each awakening. Every moment that I feel alive.

I am so incredibly grateful for each person I hold near and dear in my life. You encourage me to be my best self. To figure out who I am and to do it on purpose. You open my eyes to realities I never saw before. You challenge me to reach for the sky and to celebrate the victory of only making it to the stars. Each one of you has made me a better person. Over the course of this year of my life.

Each success. Each trial. Each laugh and each tear. All lead me down the road, to being exactly who I am supposed to be (and to exactly where I am supposed to be).

As I listen to John Legend on repeat, and watch the cold rain sprinkle from the gray sky ... I look up to the heavens and give thanks. I give thanks for this journey I have been on. It has not always been easy, but it sure has been worth it. As I hit repeat to the song entitled, Dream, one more time ... I take comfort in knowing that everything is going to be okay. Everything will play out exactly as it should.

I often waste so much time worrying about things beyond my control ... but in this moment of time ... I am letting go. I am letting go of my worries and fears. I am at peace. I am happy. I am grateful. And I am meditating on opening up my heart to new beginnings and new possibilities. As I always tell my girlfriends ... Everything happens for a reason. What's meant to be will be. And as long as I am happy in this moment, who cares how exactly I am living my life.

What is supposed to be in the end, will be. And for right now, I am okay with that.

Because we all end up exactly where we need to be.

"We never realize that replacing what’s not broken won’t fix what is. We never realize that a relationship will not save us. We never realize that when we arrive at the juncture of whether to try harder or move on, it almost always means it’s time to let go. And we grapple with it because we never realize what letting go means: simply that we, at no point, are actually permitting anything to leave. We’re just permitting ourselves to come to terms with the truth that it’s already gone." (Brianna Wiest)

The time has come for me to encounter another set of crossroads. And at this very moment, I am sitting in the center of them. Literally sitting ... debating which direction I should walk (if not run) in and asking rhetorical questions to which no one is giving me the response I would like to hear.

I have never been good at saying goodbye. Yet I've said goodbye more times than I would have liked. And even though I have managed to utter the words goodbye several times over the years, I continue to stumble with letting go.

At this moment in time, no goodbyes have been uttered for I am not ready. So I sit at "the juncture of whether to try harder or move on." I sit here reflecting on my thoughts, my actions and my words because goodbyes do not hurt until you realize how much has changed. They do not hurt until you realize how much of the events preceding the goodbye were your fault.

I sit here with my head in my hands. Warm, salty tears streaming down my sweat stained cheeks. I thought I could run to escape the pain. But instead running lead me directly to it. So I weep, sitting in the middle of the road at this juncture. I weep for what was and for what is to be. I weep because I do not know who to turn to. And even if I did, they cannot even help me utter those fateful words. They cannot help me decide which road I should now travel on.

Peering out into the horizon at each road ... I wipe away the tears with the back of my hand and exhale. I stretch out my legs and direct my eyes up towards the sky.  The words "...when we arrive at the juncture of whether to try harder or move on, it almost always means it’s time to let go..." cloud my mind. And I know deep within my heart that the truth is ... it's already gone. Whatever that it is ... it's already gone

I stand and lift up prayers to the sky. Seasons change and as time would have it, THIS season is ending. It may in fact be time to say goodbye. If life would have it ... our paths ... our roads WILL cross again. So I start to walk. Slowly but surely, I start to walk because I AM capable of doing this. More capable than I may think.

"We tie ourselves up with our anxieties when at the end of the day we always look back and realize the path was paved for us. We just had to stop questioning what we already knew to be true. We are always compelled to act when we’re meant to. The tides usually turn us on their own. We don’t always have to swim. The real art of being is learning to float." (Brianna Wiest)

The tide is turning me on it's own ... and I am just going to float and trust that things will fall into place as they should, in the end.

Because we all end up exactly where we need to be.

Reflections & Flaws

“It is necessary ... for a man to go away by himself ... to sit on a rock ... and ask, 'Who am I, where have I been, and where am I going?”
                                                           ― Carl Sandburg

I have been EXTREMELY reflective this past year. Particularly about myself. As I enter my late 20's, I feel that it is important to have a good sense of who I am as an individual. So this year, I have invested a lot of time in reflecting on my words and actions, and trying to understand who I am and what it is that I want out of life.

The neat thing about being reflective, is that it also helps you focus on what is important and set goals for yourself. In thinking about myself and how I often behave, I have realized that a character flaw of mine is that I am self-centered. Or should I say, I have grown to be self-centered over the past five or so years.

When I was younger, I was a push-over. I let others walk all over me. I also put the needs of others ahead of me, always. Although I was a GREAT listener and a great friend, I grew frustrated and hurt when my friends did not reciprocate my actions. After a painful split with my ex, I became determined that I was going to speak up and put my needs first.

While there was nothing wrong with this self-actualization at THAT moment in time, it has currently become a character flaw for me. In reflection, I've realized that I want EVERYTHING to be about me. I want things when I want them to happen. I want people to give me words of affirmation for EVERYTHING that I do. I want compliments. I want people to be available at the drop of a hat, on my time. I want to go where I want to go, when I want to go there. I want to help someone else out, when I am willing to help them out. I want to talk about myself in conversation. About my students. My studies. My career. My house. My accomplishments. ME ME ME ME ME.

THIS has to change. Now, I am a LEO and I tend to exaggerate - so the above statements could be a bit exaggerated or out of context. But the bottom line is, I have honestly forgotten how to not be so self-centered. Being an independent, working female for the past four years has made me self-sufficient and dependent on my efforts and my efforts alone. But I fear I have forgotten how to really put the needs of others first. I have forgotten how to really listen. How to ask a friend how they are doing, and to mean it. How to let conversation flow naturally, and really take in what it is that they're saying. I have forgotten how to converse period.

I think of so many conversations I hold with others. Often times I am asking all the questions or I am doing all of the talking. I no longer know how to really hold a conversation. I mean an intellectual, stimulating conversation about something other than myself or within the scope of my personal interest (i.e. reality tv, gossip, social media or something equally as bland or boring). I also realized I often answer questions asked to me ... but I do not ask them back. Or I do, only half listening to the response of the person I am talking to.

So with these epiphanies ... what do you do? I realize my shortcoming. I want to fix this shortcoming. However I do not even know how to go about changing. But I must because I am unhappy with this flaw - and I know for sure, that it is something I can change. Something that I NEED to change to be a better friend, daughter, sister, teacher, colleague, friend.

“It is when you lose sight of yourself, that you lose your way. To keep your truth in sight you must keep yourself in sight and the world to you should be a mirror to reflect to you your image; the world should be a mirror that you reflect upon.”
